Building the

Concept

We put together a team of 6 fourth year students who knew specific facets of the KMC.

Together we made a fun manifesto to put out our concept to all entities of the ecosystem

Experiments in Art and Technology

The National Institute of Design (college I studied at) is the host for a vast and complex ecosystem of resources known professionally as the Knowledge Management Center (KMC).

Sahil, one of my teachers, and I had a feeling that these fascinating artefacts like designer products, heritage furniture, board games and AV media are not appreciated as much as they deserve to be in our existing student-facility interactive system.

So a thought stuck me like a bolt of lightning, and just as fast, we put together a dream team of 6 interdisciplinary and passionate design students to come together and address the challenge from a system lens.

Reinforcing Loop

So along with six passionate students from various disciplines we built the first Knowledge Management Club in NID to make the community more involved in unearthing hidden knowledge.

So how did it work before Eye Spy?

Students would know there are books to reference, and like their seniors, when their graduation project ends it will be visible in the KMC.

Now they are more aware of the resources in the center, and how they can view or contribute to them!

This cause and effect loop is meant to continue growing as the students add to the database exponentially. We had to prepare for that as a team.

System Effect

But how did we manage to do all this in just a couple of months?

Making some waves

Bringing the club to the students was the most important step. So we turned the whole campus into a giant treasure hunt at the end of which the club would be revealed!

To fulfil the manifesto and keep the club happening, we held large scale events on a weekly basis.

With the active support of the staff and faculty we managed to attract 200 students every week to talk design and discover NID’s unique place in design history.

Each Eye Spy event would be filled with design conversations complete with related artefacts on show, curated resources, and an interactive element where participants can make something new together

Posters and snaps from our treasure hunt event; students hunting for clues and discovering the club

Beyond showcasing artefacts from the KMC, Eye Spy would have its own mechanics

Our biggest challenge was building and executing the club in such a way that the subsequent batches can carry it forward and perhaps build on to it themselves!

The club a community building design challenge hopes to be active for many years to come and play its part in restoring a bit of the curiosity cycle in our college.

So yes, we designed a community to enrich the communal nature of students in our college through an open-source knowledge club.
